A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon and eight planets sat in the twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses. Reading it takes three pieces of information, one free chart calculator, and the five-step order below. You can get a first honest reading of your own chart in under an hour.
What you need before you start
| Item | Why it matters | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Sets the Sun sign and the slow planets | You know this one |
| Exact time of birth | Sets the Rising sign, the houses and the Moon’s degree. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours. | Birth certificate, hospital record, a parent’s memory. If unknown, use 12:00 noon and ignore the houses. |
| Place of birth | Sets the horizon, and so the Rising sign and houses | City is enough |
| A chart calculator | Does the maths | Astro.com (Astrodienst), Astro-Seek, or any app that shows a wheel with houses |
The five-step reading order
Beginners drown because they try to read everything at once. Read in this order and stop after step three the first time.
- The Big Three: Sun, Moon, Rising. Sun is your core drive and what you are here to build. Moon is your emotional habit and what you need to feel safe. Rising (the Ascendant) is your approach, your first impression, and the lens the rest of the chart is seen through. Write all three down as “Sun in [sign], Moon in [sign], [sign] Rising”.
- The personal planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars. Mercury is how you think and speak. Venus is how you love and what you value. Mars is how you act and fight. Note the sign of each.
- The houses of the Big Three and personal planets. The house says where in life the planet does its work. Sun in the 10th house works in public and career. Moon in the 4th works at home. The table below lists all twelve.
- The social and outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Jupiter is where you grow and get lucky. Saturn is where you are tested and where discipline pays. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, so their signs are shared with everyone your age; read them by house, not by sign.
- Aspects. The angles between planets. Start with conjunctions (0 degrees, blended), squares (90, tension), trines (120, ease) and oppositions (180, push and pull). Read only the aspects to your Sun, Moon and Rising the first time.
The twelve houses in one line each
| House | Life area | Natural sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Self, body, first impressions (starts at the Ascendant) | Aries |
| 2nd | Money, possessions, self-worth | Taurus |
| 3rd | Communication, siblings, short trips, learning | Gemini |
| 4th | Home, family, roots, private life | Cancer |
| 5th | Creativity, romance, children, play | Leo |
| 6th | Work, routine, health, service | Virgo |
| 7th | Partnership, marriage, open enemies | Libra |
| 8th | Shared resources, intimacy, transformation, death | Scorpio |
| 9th | Belief, higher learning, travel, publishing | Sagittarius |
| 10th | Career, reputation, public life (starts at the Midheaven) | Capricorn |
| 11th | Friends, groups, hopes, community | Aquarius |
| 12th | The unconscious, solitude, hidden things, endings | Pisces |
The twelve signs by element and mode
| Sign | Element | Mode | Ruling planet (traditional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Fire | Cardinal | Mars |
| Taurus | Earth | Fixed | Venus |
| Gemini | Air | Mutable | Mercury |
| Cancer | Water | Cardinal | Moon |
| Leo | Fire | Fixed | Sun |
| Virgo | Earth | Mutable | Mercury |
| Libra | Air | Cardinal | Venus |
| Scorpio | Water | Fixed | Mars (modern: Pluto) |
| Sagittarius | Fire | Mutable | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Earth | Cardinal | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Air | Fixed | Saturn (modern: Uranus) |
| Pisces | Water | Mutable | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) |
Count your planets by element. Four or more in one element is a strong lean. None in an element is a gap you tend to feel and to seek in other people.
Worked example: reading a Big Three
Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Gemini, Leo Rising. Read it as a sentence: a person driven to go deep and keep their own counsel (Scorpio Sun), who processes feelings by talking and reading (Gemini Moon), and who meets the world warmly and visibly (Leo Rising). The tension between a private Sun and a public Rising is the first thing to write down, because that tension will show up in every other part of the chart.
Common beginner mistakes
- Reading the Sun sign alone. The Sun is one of ten placements.
- Using a noon chart and then reading the houses. Without a real birth time the houses are guesses.
- Reading outer planet signs as personal. Everyone born within several years shares them.
- Reading every aspect on the first pass. Sun, Moon and Rising aspects only, then stop.
- Treating any placement as a verdict. A chart shows tendencies and timing. What you do with them is yours.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Big Three in astrology?
Your Sun sign, Moon sign and Rising sign (Ascendant). Sun is core drive, Moon is emotional need, Rising is approach and first impression. Together they give a working portrait before you read anything else.
Can I read my birth chart without a birth time?
Partly. You still get your Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the outer planets by sign. You lose the Rising sign and the houses, and the Moon may be uncertain if it changed sign that day. Use 12:00 noon and skip the house readings.
What is the difference between a sign and a house?
A sign describes how a planet behaves. A house describes where in life it acts. Mars in Aries in the 7th house acts boldly (Aries) in partnerships (7th).
What is a Rising sign?
The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute of your birth. It sets the start of the 1st house and changes about every two hours, which is why the exact birth time matters.
Which planets are in a birth chart?
Ten placements: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Many charts also show the lunar nodes and Chiron.
What is the best free birth chart calculator?
Astro.com (Astrodienst) is the long-standing reference and shows a full wheel with houses and aspects for free. Astro-Seek is a close second.
