Witchcraft is a practice: working with intention, timing, natural materials and symbols to shape your inner state and your circumstances. It sits alongside any religion or none. You need no coven, no initiation and no special tools to begin. You need a notebook, a candle, a month of small daily actions, and a record of what happened.
Witchcraft for beginners at a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is witchcraft a religion? | No. Wicca is a religion that includes witchcraft. Witchcraft itself is a practice, and many witches are not Wiccan. |
| Do I need a coven? | No. Most beginners today practise alone, often called solitary practice. |
| What does it cost to start? | Under the price of a takeaway meal: a notebook, a white candle, salt and a kitchen herb. |
| How long until I “get it”? | Give it one full moon cycle, about 29.5 days, with something small done most days. |
| What is the first thing to learn? | Grounding, cleansing and protection, in that order. Everything else is built on those three. |
| Where do I write things down? | In a grimoire or Book of Shadows. See What is a grimoire? |
Kinds of witch: which path fits you
These labels describe where a practitioner spends most of their time. Most people blend two or three. Pick the one that sounds like your kitchen, and ignore the rest for now.
| Path | Focus | First tools |
|---|---|---|
| Green witch | Plants, herbs, gardens, the land you live on | A pot of rosemary, a field guide |
| Kitchen witch | Cooking and the home as the working space | Salt, bay leaves, a wooden spoon |
| Hedge witch | Trance, dreamwork, spirit contact | A journal by the bed, mugwort tea |
| Cosmic or lunar witch | Moon phases, astrology, planetary timing | A lunar calendar, your birth chart |
| Sea witch | Tides, shells, water and weather | A jar of sea water, a tide table |
| Eclectic witch | Whatever works, tested and recorded | A grimoire and a critical mind |
What you actually need to start
- A notebook. This becomes your grimoire. A ring binder with printable pages is the easiest to keep in order.
- One white candle. White stands in for any colour. A tealight is enough.
- Salt. Cleansing and protection. Table salt works.
- One herb. Rosemary or bay from the supermarket. Both cleanse and protect.
- A lunar calendar. Timing is half of spellwork. The ManifestMoons lunar calendar lists new and full moons with their signs, free.
- A lighter and a fireproof dish. Candles get knocked over. Plan for it.
Skip the athame, the cauldron, the wand and the crystal collection for the first three months. Buy them later, if the practice is still there.
Your first 30 days: a week-by-week plan
Week 1: ground, cleanse, protect
- Sit with both feet on the floor for two minutes each morning. Feel the weight of your body. That is grounding. Do it before every working.
- Cleanse your room once: open a window, sprinkle salt water into the corners, wipe it up after ten minutes.
- Make a simple protection charm: a pinch of salt and a bay leaf in a small cloth bag, kept by the door.
- Start the grimoire. Dedication page, dated. Then a page for each of the three practices above, in your own words.
Week 2: the moon
- Find tonight’s moon phase. Write it in the grimoire every night this week.
- Learn the five working phases: new (begin), waxing (build), full (complete, charge), waning (release), dark (rest, banish).
- On the next new or full moon, light the white candle, state one clear intention in one sentence, let the candle burn for ten minutes, then snuff it. Record the date, the phase and the sentence.
Week 3: correspondences
- Copy a colour table into the grimoire: white (any purpose), black (protection, banishing), green (money, growth), red (courage, passion), blue (calm, healing), yellow (mind, confidence), pink (self-love, friendship), purple (intuition).
- Copy the days: Sunday (Sun, success), Monday (Moon, intuition), Tuesday (Mars, courage), Wednesday (Mercury, communication), Thursday (Jupiter, growth), Friday (Venus, love), Saturday (Saturn, protection, banishing).
- Choose one working for next week and match its colour and day.
Week 4: your first full spell, and the record
- Write the spell as a recipe before you do it: purpose, day, moon phase, candle colour, herb, words, closing.
- Ground. Cleanse the space. Light the candle. Say the words once, plainly. Let the candle burn down safely or snuff it and relight it over three nights.
- Record it the same evening. Then record what happens over the next two weeks. Results in witchcraft show up as changed decisions and opened doors more often than as lightning.
Safety rules beginners skip
- Never leave a candle burning unattended. Snuffing does not weaken the working.
- Check every herb before you burn, drink or bathe in it. Mugwort, pennyroyal and wormwood are unsafe in pregnancy. Essential oils go on skin only when diluted.
- Keep salt water off houseplants and wooden floors.
- Do not do work on other people without their consent while you are learning. The results are hard to predict and harder to undo.
Books that hold up
- Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham (1988). Wiccan in framing, still the clearest beginner’s structure in print.
- The Spiral Dance by Starhawk (1979). Ritual, ethics and group practice.
- A dated lunar calendar for the current year. Timing from an old book is wrong by definition.

Frequently asked questions
How do I start practicing witchcraft as a complete beginner?
Learn grounding, cleansing and protection in the first week, follow the moon for the second, copy the basic colour and day correspondences in the third, and do one recorded candle spell in the fourth. Write everything in a grimoire.
Do I need to be Wiccan to practice witchcraft?
No. Wicca is one religion that practises witchcraft. Witchcraft itself works inside any faith or none.
What supplies do I need for witchcraft?
A notebook, a white candle, salt, one kitchen herb such as rosemary or bay, a lunar calendar and a fireproof dish. Everything else can wait.
Is witchcraft dangerous?
The practical risks are fire and unsafe herbs. Read up on any plant before you use it and never leave a candle unattended. The rest is a matter of ethics and your own rules, which you should write down in week one.
How long does it take to learn witchcraft?
One moon cycle of daily practice gives you the basics. A year of recorded work makes you competent. The learning never fully ends, which is part of the appeal.
What should a beginner witch read first?
Scott Cunningham’s Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner for structure, a current-year lunar calendar for timing, and your own grimoire for everything you have tried.
